Milan Cathedral
135 spires, over 3,400 statues and six centuries of construction: Italy's largest Gothic cathedral. The interior can be seen quickly, but the apse stained-glass windows and the crypt of San Carlo are worth the extra time.
Duomo Rooftop Terraces
Climb on foot or by lift among the spires, with the Alps visible on clear days. This is the spot on the square where booking a time slot in advance pays off the most.
Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
Milan's 19th-century drawing room, with its glass-and-iron dome and the bull mosaic underfoot: legend says spinning on your heel over it brings good luck.
Duomo Museum
Far less crowded than the cathedral itself: it houses statues, tapestries and the original stained-glass windows removed over the centuries, with the calmest route on the whole square.
During the busier months, the walk-in line for the Duomo and its terraces can run over an hour. A ticket with a reserved time slot cuts that wait to almost nothing — especially useful if your time in Milan is limited to one day.
